I just started reading the book and it seems really good! I feel like there is a lot going on within the few chapters but I like the relationship between Lettie and the boy (I don't think it ever says his name) because Lettie is so confident and the boy is very self conscious. I think that will lead to them becoming good friends, so what do you guys think about Lettie and her powers? Also I read up to page 50/ chapter VI (I think that's the roman numeral for 5). Do you guys want to read 50 pages per class or should be go by chapters?
In the beginning Gaiman set (it doesn't seem like he has a name?) The main character to already be secluded to love books and everyone shun him in a way. Do you think thay this will change the main story line? Like, would the story line change is he were more social?
I just read that Gaiman wrote a couple episodes of Doctor Who, that's pretty cool. And Kirsten, personally I feel like this would change the story line because I think the boy would have a different attitude, I think the book loving part of him makes him very curious.
I definitely think if he were more social the main character would not be so open to befriend a girl like Lettie so quiclky and go on these supernatural journeys with her.
Jenny, apparently we've all been commenting on the same post? So if you just click on the 2013 link thingy on the side it will open up. Since we're in English, I'll watch it after school. That's so awesome that he wrote some Doctor Who episodes, do you remember which?
I found the death of the opal miner very interesting. I think we should talk a little about that because his death or suicide seemed very casual among the characters.
The book also seems to include the theme of money and I think the first 6 chapters foreshadow the evilness money brings in society.
Everything seems casual about it to MC or very glossed over. That kid goes through a lot of terrible situations little kids should not go through and he never focuses on what actually happened. He distances himself one way or another, the writing alone implicates that's. As for the money, it is the downfall of every society. I wonder who wished for the money from the monster? But it does seem like a typical wish from a genie like being. "I wish yo be wealthy" but then I wonder how they got hold of that monster to make the wish? Did they go onto the property? But yes, money is evil and maybe that's why MC ended up as an artist? Cause artists don't make that much money
I can't wait to discover more about the opal miner's death and how it connects to money! I know Lettie said it was because he spent all his brother's (right?) money that he let him borrow on gambling. I am curious to explore the other causes surrounding his suicide. I wonder if the Hempstocks have anything to do with it?
I wonder if he was the one who asked the Monster for the money, saying that's what makes everyone happy. Because it doesn't seem like anyone else would be able to get to where that Monster was, and if he died near their farm then asked Ursula for money, well I guess that could make the Monster active.
What do you guys think about age depicted in this novel because the story is being told by a male adult, but is from the memories of a seven year old boy?
I was actually wondering how accurate his memory could be about this. I guess cause he's walking down memory lane some things could be exaggerated. But as a child he appears very odd and grown up. That could be the narrators age coming through, or the isolatedness of the character in general, for being an oddity.
Are we starting on Monday?
ReplyDeleteAlso, how do you add people? Ermioni is going to be reading with us too
ReplyDeleteYes, we are. What's her email? I'll add her
ReplyDeleteAnd you still aren't listed as a contributor so we have to find out how to do that or you won't be able to post. Do you have English tomorrow?

ReplyDeleteThat's chapter 6 and I think it would make more sense to go by chapters. So maybe 6 chapters a week, or more if we're feeling confident

DeleteI'm surprised that he befriended Lettie so quickly, since it's hard for him to make friends.
DeleteI just posted a video, can someone tell me if they see it because I'm not sure if I did it right
ReplyDeleteThat was an awesome video

DeleteErmioni, do you know how to make posts? It would be easier to discuss these topics. Great questions though!
